Sustainable mobility calls for new ideas and innovative approaches. This is why we promote the research and development of future-oriented projects and technologies. This is why we promote the research and development of future-oriented projects and technologies.
Research and development as an innovation driver
ASFINAG is committed to research and development (R&D) with the aim of transferring completed projects into operational practice and integrating them into regulatory systems. The resulting expertise and the implementation of pilot projects strengthens Austria as a research and business location. R&D projects also play an important role in creating stronger links with other transport carriers.
Current situation and outlook
2016 saw the launch of more exciting projects, including projects that focus on traffic safety, automated driving and the quality assurance of our environmental data (weather, traffic volume etc.).
ASFINAG was also active internationally in research and development. With our specific know-how, we support projects as part of European calls for research proposals by CEDR (Conference of European Directors of Roads) and the European Commission (Horizon 2020 programme).
Our cooperation with our German colleagues at BAST (the Federal Highway Research Institute) under the leadership of the Ministry of Transport (BMVIT) was particularly successful; in 2016 we jointly called for research proposals (in this case on the topic of concrete roads) for the first time. This way we are able to pool the two countries’ resources and knowledge in order to develop the best possible forward-looking solutions for our infrastructure. In close cooperation with the staff at BMVIT, we as ASFINAG played an active part in choosing the topics and now also in supporting the research projects.
In 2017 we are dedicated to evaluating and further developing our research priorities for the coming years. This will prepare us for new challenges and trends and implement technological innovations for our core tasks in a goal-oriented way. This is the only way to ensure that we can offer our customers a well-maintained and modern road network with adequate services and to push ahead with the necessary developments.
