Construction

The Bau Management GmbH is responsible for managing all essential construction projects on ASFINAG’s road network. This includes all activities from planning to local authority approval procedures, purchasing land to managing the execution of construction activities within the defined guidelines and legal framework conditions in line with ASFINAG’s mandate.

Development, expansion and maintenance as well as constantly increasing traffic volumes, higher demands on safety and comfort on a network length of 2.175 kilometres as well as innumerable tunnels and bridges, state-of-the-art traffic control and service facilities that must function every second of the day to ensure that vehicles that cover about 26 billion kilometres on Austria’s primary road network arrive on time and safely at their destination are a challenge that has to be successfully tackled every single day.

Leading the way in Europe

ASFINAG controls, operates and is responsible for the entire motorway and expressway network in Austria covering a total length of 2.175 km – and this figure is increasing on a daily basis: currently some 400 section kilometres are in the planning and/or construction phase.

Under a construction programme, which it coordinates with its owner, ASFINAG invests in the development and expansion of Austria’s primary road network.
ASFINAG uses the major part of these investments for new construction and expansion activities on the network in order to fulfil its goal of continuing to be a reliable mobility partner for domestic industry and business. Due to this targeted and coordinated approach taken when developing and expanding the road network, customers and business at large are provided with excellent conditions coupled with superior accessibility to regions within and outside of Austria.

Motorway and expressway lifecycles are usually limited to just under three decades. For ASFINAG this means that whenever it starts to maintain or refurbish old sections, it will be faced with new, modified requirements and opportunities. In order to respond appropriately to such challenges and meet future demands, ASFINAG also includes the respective long-term traffic development calculations for each individual section when drawing up plans for refurbishment measures. The goal is to anticipate future developments and adapt the road network during rehabilitation activities in line with expected future traffic volume increases.

Construction site management

Construction measures inevitably impact the flow of traffic. In order to keep such disruption to a minimum, ASFINAG has developed clear parameters for what is tolerable for customers and these are taken into account during planning. These include the number of major construction sites on defined road sections, the maximum tolerable loss of time due to construction activities and the duration of construction activities.

Customer friendliness and road safety of existing construction sites is constantly reviewed by both internal and external audits. Furthermore, with their ASFINAG Service Center,  ASFINAG offers road users the opportunity to voice their concerns and receive information.

Individual inquiries and concerns voiced by customers create the basis for the ongoing improvement of construction site management. As a part of their in-house knowledge management activities, the company has thus been able to build up a database that includes customer inquiries, criticism and suggestions voiced by our customers. The relevant data is then used for making the primary road system even more user-friendly.

When planning construction sites, the company attaches utmost importance to securing and fencing sites off appropriately. By introducing a standardised system for fencing off and securing construction sites ASFINAG endeavours to offer its customers the highest levels of safety on its network. By ensuring optimal traffic routing and with a large range of relevant measures, the risk of congestions and hold-ups as well as the related emissions of pollutants is reduced to a minimum. During the planning phase, the substantive legal requirements relating to the construction project are handled in coordination with the responsible authorities. On completion of the tendering procedure, the awarding of the contracts for  construction services and the setting of the starting date for construction works, the public is informed in a proper and timely manner via the media (radio, internet, print media, TV) about  the forthcoming works.
