  • What do I do with the lower portion of the toll sticker after I have correctly stuck the toll sticker in place?

You should keep this in a safe place. The lower portion of the toll sticker is the backing film and includes the serial number. It entitles you to purchase an annual pass for a special toll section at a discount: EUR 40.00 can be deducted on a single occasion. The lower portion of the toll sticker is also considered the necessary proof of purchase. If your windscreen is broken, this portion must be presented when obtaining a replacement toll sticker (or for the refund of the toll sticker costs).

  • Are there any excepetions to the mandatory toll sticker requirement?

Yes. Exceptions are provided for under certain conditions. These concern people with disabilities. Also, for example, military vehicles, emergency services vehicles, motor vehicles of a foreign public assistance services, ... see the current Tolling Regulations Part A I. for detailed information.

  • I am disabled. Is it true that I can apply for a free toll sticker?

Yes. Disabled Austrians and foreign nationals who are domiciled or ordinarily resident in Austria (hotel stays and second homes excluded) fall under a special regulation and have been able to obtain a free toll sticker since 1998. This is issued by the provincial office of the Federal Social Security Office within whose area the disabled person has his or her place of residence. Information on the conditions, the addresses of the provincial offices of the Federal Social Security Office and other useful details on the free toll sticker for disabled people can be found in the download (de).

  • Do I need a toll sticker if I want to take a vehicle for a test drive?

Yes. Multi-track vehicles that have not yet been registered for road use and are taken for test drives or fitted with temporary plates require a toll sticker if their unladen weight is less than 3.5 tonnes MPW.

  • I have bought a new car. Can I transfer the toll sticker from my old car to the new one?

No, that is not possible. The toll sticker is vehicle-specific and cannot be transferred to another vehicle.

  • Which roads does the mandatory toll sticker requirement apply to in Austria?

Essentially, the mandatory toll sticker requirement applies to all motor vehicles up to and including 3.5 tonnes MPW on the motorways and expressways shown in orange. Special toll rates also apply on cost-intensive Alpine crossings. Here are special rates but there is noc mandatory toll sticker requirement.

  • Motorway pickerl – what's that?

‘Motorway pickerl' is the popular name given to the toll sticker for motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes MPW and motorbikes.

  • I have a trailer / mobile home / motorbike sidecar. Do I need an extra toll sticker?

No. An additional toll sticker is not required for trailers, mobile homes, motorbike sidecars or the like.

  • Is the 10-day or the 2-month toll sticker valid if it hasn't been punched?

No. 10-day and 2-month toll stickers must be punched by the point of sale. Toll stickers that have not been punched or stuck in place are invalid. Please therefore check that the toll sticker has been correctly punched at the time of purchase.

  • Can I buy the 10-day or the 2-month toll sticker in advance?

Yes. The day on which the toll sticker is purchased does not always have to be the day of first use. Toll stickers can also be purchased in advance - in accordance with the customer's wishes. All that matters, however, is that the actual first day of use is punched.

Example: You buy the toll sticker in February and have it punched by the point of sales for 10 March. The toll sticker is therefore valid from 10 March to 19 March inclusive.

  • Is a purchased toll sticker invalid because I have forgotten to stick it correctly onto the windscreen?

Yes, toll stickers that have not been punched or stuck in place are invalid. However, there are exceptions. If motor vehicles are being taken on a test drive or transferred, it is also sufficient for a 2-month toll sticker to be clearly visible behind the windscreen. However, if you have an annual toll sticker or a 10-day toll sticker, you must always stick this in place. If the motor vehicle is type-approved as not being fitted with a windscreen, you must carry the toll sticker about your person. Should you park your vehicle at a rest area that requires a toll sticker to be displayed, the toll sticker must be placed in the vehicle so that it is clearly visible from the outside.

  • When should I remove the expired toll sticker?

Remove your toll sticker only when the term of validity has expired. The toll sticker loses its validity when removed, as this destroys the integrated security features.

  • How to identify an original toll sticker?

Following charakteristics help u distinguished a real toll sticker from a fake:

Toll stickers are manufactured by a specialized company. Similarly to Euro bills there is a security hologram as main protection against counterfeit products: tilts to the toll sticker, dazzle the federal eagle and the motorway symbol.

The date appears in the hologram: For example "15". It refers to the validity period from 1st December 2014 to 31st January 2016.

Even against strong light kept an original toll sticker is not and under no circumstances translucent. This also applies to the carrier film: the writing of a page must not show through to the other side.

The surface material of the toll sticker reflects the light. With a flashlight, this effect is easy to recognize. Even if the sticker has allready been sticked.

On the carrier film, where the vignette has stuck before stripping may remain no adhesive residue.
