On the motorways and expressways marked in orange on the map below all motor vehicles of up to and including a maximum permissible gross weight of 3.5t are in principle obliged to display a toll sticker.

Special regulations and exemptions

Free of charge toll sticker for disabled persons

An exemption from the obligation to purchase a toll sticker applies to Austrian and foreign nationals who are disabled and have their ordinary place of residence or habitual residence in Austria (hotel stays or second domiciles are not covered by this exemption). Since 1998, people with disabilities have been entitled to obtain a toll sticker free of charge which is issued by the Federal Social Authority’s regional branch office located in the district the disabled person has his/her ordinary place of residence.

Exceptions from mandatory tolling

Subject to certain conditions, further exceptions from the obligation to display a toll sticker apply to the following vehicles: military vehicles, emergency vehicles using blue lights, motor vehicles belonging to foreign public emergency, aid or rescue services and the like. Regulations governing trailers

Trailers, caravans towed by multi-track vehicles, motorbike sidecars and the like do not require a separate toll sticker.

Motor vehicles not previously registered for traffic use

Multi-track vehicles not previously registered for traffic use and using trade plates require a toll sticker provided their service weight does not exceed 3.5 tons maximum permissible gross weight.
