Frequently asked questions about the toll sticker and the digitale vignette

What types of vignettes are there? How long and where do they apply? Where do I need it and when am I qualify for a replacement? These and other of frequently asked questions can be found in the following FAQ area.

General questions

The toll sticker has been compulsory on Austria's motorways and expressways since 1997. With the Vignette 2018 we offer for the first time an alternative to the traditional toll sticker. The digital vignette is bound to the license plate and offers greater convenience for holders of transferable number plates.

Toll sticker

There are some 6,000 outlets in Austria and abroad ensuring that the toll sticker can be bought easily. There is an interactive search feature for outlets near you under menu item "sale outlets".

Digital Vignette

You can buy the digital vignette either in the ASFINAG toll shop from anywhere within the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland or using our free ASFINAG App. You can also purchase the Digital Vignette at the sales offices of the ÖAMTC, ARBÖ and ADAC, in various petrol stations and tobacconists, as well as at the ASFINAG toll stations. Furthermore, you have the opportunity to buy the digital vignette at vending machines on selected rest areas.

There are 10-day, 2-month and annual vignettes for both types of vignette (toll sticker and digital vignette).

Annual vignette: is valid for 14 months, from 1 December of the previous year until 31 January of the following year.

2-month-Vignette: is valid for a period of two months. For example: valid from January 10th, validity expires March 10th, midnight.

10-days-Vignette: is valid for ten days. For example: valid from January 10th, validity expires January 19 th, midnight.

Only available as a digital vignette:

1-day vignette: Valid for one calendar day. Example: January 10th from midnight to midnight.

ATTENTION:

  • A vignette that is not affixed or punched (10-day or 2-month) is invalid and can result in penalties of between €300 and €3,000 if no replacement toll is paid.
  • If the digital vignette is purchased in the ASFINAG toll shop or via the ASFINAG app, it is only valid from the 18th day after the online purchase (see "Questions about the digital vignette"). This deadline does not apply if you purchase a 1-day or 10-day vignette!

There is also no difference in the prices.

All vehicles up to and including 3.5t technically permissible maximum laden mass (TPMLM) have to pay toll on motorways and expressways marked in orange (see grafic). No toll sticker is required for the particularly cost-intensive sections, the section toll, where special toll rates apply.

Exceptions to the compulsory Vignette usage

The exceptions shall enter into force in five sections as of 15 December 2019. The legal basis for this is the Federal Roads Toll Act (Bundesstraßenmautgesetz).

The exceptions apply to the following stretches of road:

  • the toll road A 1 Westautobahn between the national border at Walserberg and the Salzburg Nord junction,
  • the toll road A 12 Inntalautobahn between the national border at Kufstein and the Kufstein-Süd junction,
  • the toll road A 14 Rheintal/Walgau Autobahn between the national border at Hörbranz and the Hohenems junction and
  • the toll road A 26 Linzer Autobahn (currently still under construction)

No. No additional toll sticker is required for trailers, caravans, motorbike sidecars etc.

It is not possible to change during the validity period of the vignette. Therefore, if you have purchased an annual adhesive vignette it is not possible to change to a digital vignette during the year of validity (1 December 2023 to 31. January 2025). The reverse is also not possible. For the following vignette year, however, you may decide which form of vignette you would prefer.

Exception: If a windscreen on which an adhesive toll sticker is fixed is broken, we support free, uncomplicated and rapid change to a digital toll sticker.

The current toll regulations can be downloaded. Please also take note of all applicable appendices.

Like with the traditional toll sticker, ASFINAG only performs random checks of the Digital Vignette. As always, our colleagues from service and controls (Service- und Kontrolldienst) (around 100 staff members) ensure that the toll has been paid. There will only be up to twenty automatic toll sticker control cameras on more than 2,200 kilometres of motorways and expressways. These cameras are mobile and change location regularly.

The control systems only store the data of vehicles without a valid traditional toll sticker or Digital Vignette. These data are exclusively used as evidence for toll-related offences and to handle the toll fine claims. No other data are stored or are accessible in any way.

Frequently asked questions about the toll sticker

The following features allow you to tell a real toll sticker from a fake one:

  • All toll stickers are produced by a specialist company. Similar to a bank note, they have a security hologram that serves as the main protection against counterfeiting: when you tilt the toll sticker, the federal eagle and the motorway symbol shimmer.
  • Also part of the hologram: The year "e.g. 24" refers to the toll sticker's period of validity from 1 December 2023 until 31 January 2025.
  • Furthermore, the real toll sticker is not light-permeable even when you hold it against strong light. The same applies to the carrier foil: the writing on one side must not shine through to the other side.
  • The surface of the toll sticker is made of a special material that reflects Using a torch, this effect can be easily observed when the toll sticker is attached to the vehicle.
  • The empty field on the carrier foil – to which the toll sticker was attached before being pulled off – must not have any adhesive residue on it.

In addition, you can also make a toll sticker authentification online. By entering the toll sticker number including the check digit, the system detects whether the toll sticker is a correctly printed one. The toll sticker number can be found under the printed barcode.

Car toll sticker

Attach the toll sticker in a visible location on the inside of the windscreen (our recommendation: at top left or near the rear view mirror).

Attention: Do not attach the toll sticker in the tinted section of the windscreen.

Motorbike toll sticker

Attach the toll sticker on a clean and above all non-replaceable part of the motorcycle (e.g. a fork rod or the tank).

Attention: A toll sticker attached to a luggage case or a motorcycle bag is not valid.

Keep it safe. The lower toll sticker section is the carrier foil including serial number.

The toll sticker section serves as proof of purchase. If your windscreen breaks, this section must be presented to obtain a replacement toll sticker (or to have the toll sticker costs refunded).

Yes, toll stickers are invalid if they are not attached or not punched. However, there are exceptions. If a vehicle is taken for a test drive or transferred, it is sufficient for a 2-month toll sticker to be merely clearly visible behind the windscreen. If you have a yearly toll sticker or a 10-day toll sticker, it always has to be attached to the windscreen. For vehicles that are type-approved as not having a windscreen, the toll sticker has to be carried with you. If you park your vehicle in a rest area where the toll sticker is compulsory, the toll sticker has to be placed inside the vehicle such that it can be clearly seen from the outside.

No, you can't do that. The toll sticker is issued for a specific vehicle and cannot be transferred to another vehicle.

If the windscreen breaks (from falling rock for example) holders of a yearly toll sticker are either given a replacement or a refund. For this, you need:

  • A copy of the registration certificate
  • The detached yearly toll sticker and the toll sticker carrier foil
  • A copy of the repair invoice from the workshop that replaced the windscreen (please note that in the case of company vehicles the driver must be named, too!)
  • The completed and signed form for a toll sticker replacement in den event of windscreen breakage.
  • If you require a refund, you also need to provide bank details (bank, IBAN, BIC code and name of account holder)

  • The detached yearly toll sticker including the lower toll sticker section (= carrier foil), a copy of the vehicle de-registration document.
  • Proof that the car is a write-off (for example letter briefly explaining the situation, stamp and signature of your repair shop, the automobile club or the scrapping company). Important: The document must clearly show that the car is a write-off.
  • The completed and signed form for a replacement toll sticker write-off.
  • If you require an refund, you also need to provide bank details (bank, IBAN, BIC code and name of account holder), a copy of the second toll sticker or the purchase receipt.
